Researchers in the Netherlands have developed a procedure that allows to grow new cartilage in the joint and also alleviates the symptoms. There is more and more evidence that “the process of tissue breakdown in osteoarthritis can be reversed,” writes Mylène Jansen together with her colleague Simon Mastbergen in a review article in the renowned specialist magazine “Nature Reviews Rheumatology”.
Can the worn material really rejuvenate? “I take the results very seriously,” says Henning Madry, Professor of Experimental Orthopedics and Osteoarthritis Research at Saarland University Hospital. “The relief during distraction treatment apparently gives the cartilage the opportunity to regenerate. I’m amazed that it seems to work so well.”
