Dr. Tim A. E. J. Boymans, MD, PhD

Orthopedic Surgeon and Deputy Head of Department
Surgical Technique of Knee Joint Distraction

Dr. Tim Boymans is orthopedic surgeon at Maastricht UMC+ and deputy head of the department of orthopaedics. His clinical focus is on knee disorders, particularly early osteoarthritis. His aim is to provide treatments that can effectively reduce symptoms and slow progression of disease, thereby delaying or avoiding the need for joint replacement. Where possible, he prioritises non-surgical strategies and careful shared decision making with patients. He studied medicine at Maastricht University, graduating in 2009, and obtained his PhD on hip arthroplasty in elderly patients. As part of this work he spent time at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston with support from a Fulbright fellowship. From 2010 to 2016 he trained as an orthopaedic resident in several hospitals in Limburg. He subsequently completed a fellowship in hip and knee prosthetics and implant-related infection at Noordwest Ziekenhuisgroep in Alkmaar, and undertook additional training in revision surgery at the Endoklinik in Hamburg. Dr. Boymans combines his clinical work with academic research at Maastricht University and the CAPHRI research institute. His publications cover subjects including osteoarthritis, joint replacement, cartilage repair and outcome prediction in knee surgery. He is a member of the UK Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) and serves on the board of the Dutch Knee Society. He is recognised for an open and collaborative approach to patient care, with an emphasis on tailoring treatment plans to the individual and ensuring that research outcomes translate into meaningful improvements for patients.
