Mark Larkin (48) – Switzerland
After severe knee decline, KJD in 2022 restored mobility, enabled a 90km walk, and delayed knee replacement while improving quality of life.
“I can structure my daily life without limitations and take part in activities again without constantly having to say, “I can’t do that.” My quality of life has improved tremendously.”
Before my treatment, I was living with constant and severe knee pain. At the time, I was training to become a carpenter, but everyday activities such as climbing stairs, walking for longer periods, or carrying heavy objects caused intense pain. Even simple things like putting on my shoes were difficult. I had to completely stop doing sports and was unable to participate in activities that most people my age enjoy, such as playing football or basketball, cycling long distances, or going out dancing with friends. Eventually, I had to give up my training, and I could not pursue my dream of becoming an automotive mechatronics technician. My doctors even told me that, at just 23 years old, I had the knee of a 70-year-old.
I was very anxious about the surgery and the long rehabilitation process, and it was certainly not an easy journey. I received the external fixator in April 2025, which was removed after six weeks. This was followed by several months of inpatient rehabilitation and later daily outpatient rehabilitation. In the first weeks, I had to relearn basic movements such as walking properly. There were some setbacks along the way, including a follow-up procedure to remove scar tissue, but this ultimately improved my knee mobility significantly. Throughout the process, staying positive and trusting the treatment was essential.
Today, my life looks completely different. I can walk long distances again, climb stairs, squat without pain, and cycle for extended periods. Most importantly, I am almost completely pain-free. I can structure my daily life without limitations and take part in activities again without constantly having to say, “I can’t do that.” My quality of life has improved tremendously.
Looking back, I can honestly say that the surgery and rehabilitation were worth it. Although the process required perseverance and determination, it has given me back the ability to fully participate in life and reduced my need for pain medication. To anyone who is still hesitant about choosing knee joint distraction, I would say: be prepared to fight and stay committed, even when it is difficult. If you do, the results can be truly life-changing. I am very grateful that I took this step.
